What is SEO?

It is the process of getting traffic from the free, organic, editorial or natural listings on search engines. All major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing have such results, where web pages and other content such as videos or local listings are shown and ranked based on what the search engine consider most relevant users.

SEO Ranking Factors and Periodic Table

The most important things that can help you gain traffic from search engines such as Google and Bing.

There are four major groups of factors:

1. On Page Ranking Factors
2. Off Page Ranking Factors
3. Violations
4. Blocking

Factors Work In Combination

There is no single factor will guarantee search engines rankings. Having a great HTML title won’t help if a page has low quality content. Having many links won’t help if they are low quality links. But having several positive factors can increase your visibility.

On Page Ranking Factors

On Page search ranking factors are those that are entirely within the Publisher’s own control. What type of content you publish, how does your site architecture help or hinder search engines and how important HTML clues that help search engines with determining relevancy?

Off Page Ranking Factors

Off Page ranking factors are those that publishers cannot directly control. Search engines use these because they learned long ago publisher signals alone don’t help relevancy.

Violations

There are some techniques that they detect “spam” or “black hat” which may results banned from the search engines entirely.

Blocking

This is where searchers themselves may decide they don’t like pages from a particular website, even if those websites don’t violate any traditional spam rules. Blocking has a big impact on what the individual who blocks sees, but it also has an impact on what every searcher sees.

What is Meta Tags

Meta Tags are HTML tags which provide additional information about a web document. Unlike regular tags, Meta tags do not provide formatting information for the browser.

The provide such information as the author, date of creation or latest update for the page, titles, descriptions and keywords (which tell the search engines the subject matter of the page).

For SEO purpose those last three (title, description and keyword) are what mater the most. Also important are alt tags (which provide additional information about images) and header tags (which indicate to users important areas of content on your page).

The Importance of Meta Tags:

Meta Tags are important for two reasons:

1. They help provide the information that is listed in the SERP’s (Search Engines results pages).
2. They are part of what influences (albeit only slightly) how well our individual pages rank on the SERPs.

All Major search engines utilize Meta description and title tags in an effort to understand the relevance of the site. They also look at alt tags (important in today’s Blended/Universal search results – which features video, etc.).

The Basics of Meta Elements and Tags:

Meta tags are not something you should spend a lot of time worrying about. But do focus on crafting them so they properly reflect your site and its mission.

Title Tag:

While no hard and fast rules have been established about title tags (this is actually a Meta element but is often referred to as “Title tag”), it is widely accepted that they are an important part of a web page.

Title tags should never exceed 65 characters, since this is the point where most search engines will truncate the information. While many sites routinely exceed this character limit, the value of a clear and concise title tag outweighs any benefit you may obtain from repeating the keyword or including keyword variations.

It’s not all about your position on the SERP’s. It’s also about the quality of the listing and if it inspires confidence in your site and tell the user you have what they are looking for.

Description Tag:

The Description is one of several Meta Elements which assists users in determining whether a resource will be useful to them when conducting queries and viewing the SERPs. You Description tag conveys the purpose of the page in a clear, objective manner for these users and in some instances (should the search engines not finding something better within the copy of your webpage) are used for search engines results.

When you write your Description tag think of your audience and the information you wish to convey. The Description tag is intended to assist in determining if a listed resource will be useful to them, so stuffing keywords into this element and being “cutesy” to too “hypey” instead of being informative, clear and concise could cause alienation of the potential site visitor.

Typically the first 150 characters (including spaces) of the Description are created for the purpose of display on search engines results pages and should therefore be as concise, coherent and as objective as possible.

Keyword Tag:

The Keyword tag is the least important Meta tag, but it does serve as a guide to the theme of the page, and it tell the engines what words the can expect to find on your web page.

There are few rules for your Keyword tag. First, keep the number of keywords to minimum – there is now value in stuffing keywords in there. A word/phrase only belongs in your Meta tag if it appears prominently in your body content. Do not repeat keywords in your Keyword tag.

It is important to realize that search engines assign little value to the keyword tag as it has been and is still abused those attempting to game the search results pages.

ALT Tags:

ALT tags are the alternative text that the browser display when a web surfer is unable (or unwilling) to see the images in a web page.

The ALT tag was initially utilized to help those with visual disabilities and use was required to be in what is referred to as 508 compliance.

You should not stuff your ALT tags with keyword, keep the text short and concise and use the most relevant keyword to that page and the particular image.

On Page Optimization Techniques:

Headline tags (H1, H2, etc.):

Header tags are designed to turn text on your site into a Headline – so they actually change the appearance of the font by making it bigger – like headline would be. The reason they help you is because the engines feel that if you have keywords within Header tags then the page must really be focus on those words otherwise you wouldn’t use the words in the headlines.

By the way, if you are worried about appearances you can use CSS to alter the Header tags so the text doesn’t actually look different but you still get the SEO benefit of the tags.

Try using an H1 and an H2 on your pages. Don’t stuff keywords into these tags – use a real sentence that uses your keyword well.

What is Webmaster Tools?

Webmaster Tools is a free toolset which helps you first understand what’s going on with your website. This way you make decisions based off of data instead of going in blindly. Webmaster Tools provides you with detailed reports about your pages visibility on search engines

Major Webmaster Tools:

1. Google Webmaster Tools
2. Bing Webmaster Tools
3. Yahoo! Site Explorer

Before proceeding next you must need to create your website sitemap for your website.

If you are WordPress user then use plugin to create sitemap called as “Google XML sitemap”

Go to your dashboard > Plugin > Add New and search for “Google XML Sitemap” and install it.

Or if you are blogger then you don’t have to create sitemap.

Adding Websites to Google Webmaster Tools:

Sign up for Google Webmaster Tools from below link

http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools

Click on “Add a site” as shown in below image.

Click on “Continue”

You will be redirected to the verify ownership page as shown in below image.

Download the HTML verification file and upload into your root directory.

If you are blogger then use “Alternate methods” from next tab.

After uploading the HTML verification file click on “Verify”.

Then you will see your site is listed in your website list on dashboard.

Click on the website name

On left sidebar go to “Site Configuration”

Click on “Sitemaps”

Click on “Submit a Sitemap”

Add “sitemap.xml”

If you are blogger user then add “atom.xml”

Click on “Submit Sitemap”

Next you must add your feed

Add “feed”

Click on “Submit Sitemap”

You are done.

Adding Websites to Bing Webmaster Tools:

If you want to index your website to Bing then you need to add your website to Bing Webmaster Tools and provide a sitemap because Bing has their own set of Webmaster Tools

How to add website to Bing Webmaster Tools?

Login to the Bing Webmaster Tools and you will see the button “sign in to use webmaster tools” click the button. You will be redirected to Windows Live Login page and sign in with your Windows Live Id or If you don’t have then you must sign up there.

Click on “Submit” button.

Again you will get pop ups window there you need to verify your ownership by placing XML file on your web server or copy and paste tag in your default webpage. If will prefer to choose first method because it will not affects your website loading time and less chance of mistake.

Download the XML file and upload it in the main directory of your website (usually “public_html”) using or your online file manager or FTP software. If you don’t’ have FTP software then download it from here.

If you are done the above steps then click on “Verify” button. Bing Webmaster Tools verifies your ownership and you will be redirected to the “Dashboard” page.

Click on “Crawl” button at the top of the page.

Click on “Sitemaps” link on the left side of the page.

Click on the “Add sitemaps” button. Enter the URL of your website example.

http://www.xploringminds.com/sitemaps.xml  in the box and click on “Submit”. If you don’t have sitemap created then go to your dashboard > Plugin > Add New and search for “Google XML Sitemap” and install it.

Bing Webmaster Tools will download your website sitemap and it will take up to 3 days to crawl your website.

Adding Websites to Yahoo Site Explorer:

Yahoo Site Explorer allows you to explore all the web pages indexed by Yahoo! Search. View the most popular pages from any site, dive into a comprehensive sitemap, and find pages that link to that site or any page.

How to add website to Yahoo! Site Explorer?

Sign up with yahoo user id or your Sign in with your existing yahoo user id with below link

Then you will be redirected to the Authentication page.

Choose your option to verify your authentication.

After this submit your sitemap.

Add “sitemap.xml”

If you are blogger user then add “atom.xml”

Click on “Add Feed”

Next you must add your feed

Add “feed”

Click on “Add Feed”
